The courtroom forced every piece of the story apart—money, fire, lies, violence, and the reckless explosion—so no one could hide behind one dramatic moment.
Victor’s trial lasted six weeks.
The prosecution did not start with my burns.
They started with money.
E. Hale Advisory.
Hale Maritime.
Redevelopment.
Insurance.
False signatures.
Then guesthouse.
Motive.
Preparation.
Accelerant.
Text:
Evelyn’s there.
I know.
Then fire.
Then obstruction.
Nolan.
Lydia.
Mara.
The sequence was devastating.
Defense attacked Nolan hardest.
Paid hush money.
Deleted footage.
Ran.
True.
Why trust him?
Prosecutor:
Don’t trust him. Trust carrier records, bank records, camera logs, and lab evidence.
Good.
Then Lydia.
Defense called her vigilante arsonist because yacht explosion.
True she was reckless.
They argued she manufactured evidence against Victor.
But her copies predated explosion.
Metadata.
Mail receipts.
Still credible in parts.
Then Mara.
She admitted lying to initial investigators.
Admitted helping Victor pressure me with divorce papers.
Admitted humiliating me after burns.
The jury watched living-room security video.
Food.
Kick.
Remote.
I hated it.
Then defense:
“You hated your mother?”
“No.”
“You kicked her.”
“Yes.”
“Why should jury believe you now?”
“Because I’m telling you the parts that make me look terrible too.”
That mattered.
Then me.
I testified.
Burns.
Marriage.
Documents.
Remote.
Yacht.
No dramatic speech.
Defense asked:
“You pressed a device you believed could destroy property, correct?”
“Yes.”
“You had no idea whether anyone was aboard?”
“No.”
“Yet you pressed it.”
“Yes.”
Bad.
Honest.
Then:
“So you are willing to take dangerous actions when angry.”
I looked at jury.
“I took a reckless action. That does not make the fire in my bedroom accidental.”
Good.
Separate.
Then prosecutor on redirect:
“Did pressing the remote cause your guesthouse fire six weeks earlier?”
“No.”
Simple.
Then expert.
Fire intentionally set.
Then Victor took stand?
Usually risky. He did.
He wanted control narrative.
He said he only intended property insurance fraud, not murder? That admits crimes. Better defense maybe he admitted no fire involvement. Let's keep no stand? But story can. Better he did not testify.
Then verdict.
Guilty:
attempted murder.
Arson.
Insurance fraud.
Identity theft/fraud.
Obstruction.
Acquitted one conspiracy count involving attorney due insufficient proof.
Good.
Sentence long.
Not life maybe 28 years.
Given age 52, substantial.
Then divorce finalized.
Mara cried.
Not because wanted him free.
Because father gone.
Both.
Then Lydia.
Separate case.
Pleaded to reckless arson/property destruction and evidence interference.
Received custody/probation depending. Let's say limited prison plus probation due cooperation, no injuries.
Nolan.
Pled obstruction, evidence tampering, accepted hush money.
Reduced sentence for cooperation.
Charles Vane.
Fraud charges.
Then Julia Marks? Not involved.
No charges.
Then waterfront property.
Court ordered some Hale Maritime assets frozen.
Mansion marital.
Could be sold.
I had decision.
I sold.
Why?
Not revenge.
I did not want marina.
The land was worth huge.
Proceeds after liabilities split per divorce.
I used part for burn rehabilitation foundation? Maybe.
Not immediately.
First bought smaller home inland.
No water view.
Mara joked:
“Traumatized by yachts?”
“Yes.”
We laughed.
Then she moved nearby.
Not with me.
Boundaries.
Then public story exploded.
Yacht video.
Flames.
Bandaged woman.
“YOU SHOULD’VE FINISHED THE JOB.”
Internet loved.
I hated.
The judge instructed jurors not to treat the yacht explosion as evidence Victor set the guesthouse fire. Different event. Different actor. Different intent.
I appreciated that more than I can explain.
The most dramatic image in the case was legally almost irrelevant to the most serious charge.
