Chapter 6 - MARA

My daughter’s apology mattered only after she stopped trying to repair me and started admitting what she had actually done.
Mara moved into a small apartment.
Not because I threw her out.
Because she could not stay in mansion.
Every room reminded her of Victor.
And of what she did to me.
She started therapy.
Good.
She also tried to over-help.
Groceries.
Doctor rides.
Paperwork.
I stopped her.
“You don’t have to become my nurse to prove you’re sorry.”
She cried.
“I don’t know what else to do.”
“Ask.”
That was new for both of us.
Then we talked about before fire.
Mara admitted Victor had been turning her against me for years.
Small comments.
“Your mother doesn’t understand business.”
“She resents how close we are.”
“She’s emotional lately.”
Then after our marriage deteriorated:
“Your mother wants half of everything.”
“She’ll sell the house.”
“She doesn’t care what happens to you.”
Mara began seeing me as threat to family stability.
Then burns.
Instead of softening, Victor escalated.
He told Mara I caused fire by leaving candles? But official electrical. Better he said I ignored maintenance and created accident. Then he told her I planned to sue company and take marina.
By time I returned, Mara believed my injury had become weapon.
That is why she dumped food.
Not because she hated burns.
Because she believed I was using victimhood to destroy father.
Still cruel.
Still choice.
Then she said:
“I wanted you to look weak in front of him.”
That hurt.
Then:
“Why?”
“So he’d stop being afraid of you.”
There.
Victor had made my survival look dangerous.
Then I asked:
“Did you know about his affair?”
Affair? Prompt says replaced you maybe with new partner? We can introduce actual mistress? But not in prompt. Better “replaced” could mean socially with new woman maybe not specified. Let's keep maybe assistant named Cassandra Lee? But avoid adding unneeded. Let's say Mara believed Victor had a new partner, an investor named Celeste? Not necessary. Could be metaphorically replaced mother with Mara as hostess. Hmm.
“Dad already replaced you” meant Victor told Mara he planned divorce and had been dating Julia Marks, a family friend. We can introduce later but not central.
Mara knew.
She met Julia twice.
That explained cruelty.
Then I asked:
“Did Julia know about fire?”
No evidence.
She broke off after arrest.
Not central.
Then Mara’s testimony.
Prosecutor prepared.
She had to admit lie.
Her own conduct.
Defense would attack.
She wanted to hide food incident.
I said:
“No.”
Why?
Because credibility.
She hit me.
It was recorded on house cameras? Maybe yes. The living room had security. Good.
Defense would use.
Better own.
Then trial.
Before that, plea offer.
Victor offered to plead financial crimes if attempted murder dropped.
Prosecutor refused due evidence.
Then he wrote me.
I’m sorry.
No.
Then:
I never meant for you to burn that badly.
I stared.
Not denial.
His attorney later said emotional statement not legal admission.
Still.
Then:
I wanted the house empty.
But I knew he knew I was there.
Carrier text.
Then:
I thought Nolan would get you out.
What?
Another version.
He claimed he expected Nolan to remove me before fire.
Nolan denied.
No evidence.
Derek-like shifting.
Then Mara said:
“He can’t say I misunderstood anymore.”
That was growth.
Then she handed me something.
A black remote.
Not same? Evidence returned? No, police kept. She had television remote identical shape.
I flinched.
She noticed.
Threw it away.
Then I stopped.
“No.”
I picked it up.
“This is a remote.”
Objects do not get to rule rooms.
That became later lesson.
Then we laughed weakly.
Healing.
Mara eventually asked whether I wanted her to testify about everything Victor said during my rehabilitation.
“Yes.”
Even the ugly parts?
“Yes.”
He had told her I exaggerated pain.
That I enjoyed attention.
That I would use scars in divorce.
Hearing those words publicly humiliated me.
Still, hiding them would protect the system he built.

Truth was not always dignified.
Sometimes dignity came after.
