Chapter 1 - The Ground Ruby Said Had Been Dug Up

By the time Alessio Ventresca reached the memorial garden, his seven-year-old daughter was already fighting to protect the last thing her mother had grown with her own hands.

Ruby and eleven-year-old Evelyn Moretti stood beside the shallow muddy pond, both girls furiously pulling at each other’s hair.

Ruby still had one flower clenched in her fist.

A pale blossom from Isabella’s old garden.

The flowerbeds had belonged to Ruby’s mother long before anyone began calling the place a memorial. Isabella had spent years tending them beside the estate greenhouse, teaching Ruby the names of flowers before the little girl could even spell them.

Now half the beds looked neglected.

Another section near the greenhouse wall had been torn apart completely.

Claudia Moretti rushed across the garden.

She grabbed Evelyn and pulled her daughter away.

Then she turned on Ruby.

“YOUR MOTHER IS DEAD. HER GARDEN MUST DIE TOO.”

Before Ruby could answer—

Claudia’s open palm struck hard across the child’s cheek.

SLAP.

Ruby lost her balance.

She fell backward into the shallow muddy pond.

SPLASH.

Her head remained safely above the water, but mud covered the back of her cream dress and splattered her arms.

The flower flew from her hand and landed near the bank.

Ruby stared up in shock.

Evelyn bent down.

Picked up the same flower.

Then walked toward Ruby.

With one angry swing, she struck Ruby across the face with it.

SWISH.

Petals exploded into the air.

That was when Alessio entered the garden.

He saw his daughter sitting in the mud.

Saw Claudia standing over her.

Saw Evelyn holding what remained of Isabella’s flower.

Ruby looked at him.

Her face collapsed.

“DADDY... THAT WAS MOMMY’S FAVORITE FLOWER.”

Something in Alessio’s expression hardened instantly.

He crossed the garden.

Pulled Ruby carefully out of the mud.

Then placed her behind him.

Only after his daughter was safe did he turn toward Claudia.

His hand came across her face once.

WHACK.

Claudia staggered backward and crashed into the wooden flower-pot stand.

CRASH.

The stand collapsed.

Ceramic pots shattered around her.

No second blow followed.

Marco Moretti charged forward.

“It’s just mud. Let it go.”

He raised his fist.

Marco swung first.

Alessio slipped the punch—

then landed one powerful right hand across Marco’s face.

WHACK.

Marco reeled backward.

SPLASH.

He landed sitting in the same muddy pond.

Alessio immediately returned his attention to Ruby.

He stood in front of her.

Shielding her.

Claudia struggled upright beside the collapsed shelving.

Marco sat stunned in the mud.

Then Ruby stopped crying.

Her eyes had moved beyond all of them.

Toward the greenhouse.

She lifted one trembling hand.

Alessio followed her finger.

Beside the glass wall was a section of Isabella’s old flowerbed where the earth had been violently churned up.

Not weeds.

Not ordinary gardening.

Fresh digging.

Everyone slowly turned toward it.

Ruby continued pointing.

Her frightened voice broke the silence.

“DADDY... WHAT DID THEIR FAMILY BURY DOWN THERE?”

Alessio turned toward Claudia and Marco.

Claudia’s face went pale.

Marco stopped moving.

Evelyn instinctively stepped backward—

away from both her parents.

Nobody answered Ruby.

And that silence told Alessio that his daughter had just asked exactly the right question.
