Chapter 5 - They Found the First Container Beneath the Churned Earth
Investigators excavated the disturbed section beside the greenhouse the next morning.
Marco and Claudia were ordered to stay away.
Alessio watched from several yards back.
Ruby did not.
He refused to turn discovery into entertainment for a child.
About eighteen inches beneath the surface, a technician’s shovel struck plastic.
They uncovered a heavy industrial container wrapped inside two contractor bags.
Then another.
Both were old.
Both carried faded product markings consistent with the chemical residue identified in Isabella’s archived soil test.
One container was empty.
The other held a small amount of degraded liquid.
Neither proved by itself who had used them.
But the location mattered.
So did the burial.
Inside the same excavation area investigators found rusted metal clips, sections of torn invoice labels, and part of a delivery tag bearing the name of Marco’s landscaping company.
Alessio stood staring at the pit.
Someone had not merely used the wrong garden product.
Someone had deliberately concealed what remained afterward.
Then the lead investigator asked:
“Did your wife know these were here?”
Alessio thought of Isabella’s email.
Do not remove anything from the greenhouse until I complete the independent soil review.
Maybe she had known.
Maybe that was why Marco had been barred from the greenhouse.
But one question remained.
If the containers had been buried months or years ago—
why was the earth freshly disturbed now?
Someone had recently come back for them.
