Chapter 6 - Evelyn Finally Told the Adults What Happened the Night Before
Evelyn was eleven.
That mattered.
She had struck Ruby with the flower.
She had participated in the fight.
But she was still a child living inside whatever story her parents had told her.
A child interviewer spoke with her without Claudia or Marco present.
At first, Evelyn said nothing.
Then she started crying.
Her parents had brought her to the estate after midnight because Claudia said they needed to “fix something before the workers ruined it.”
Evelyn stayed near the greenhouse entrance with a flashlight.
Marco and Claudia dug.
They uncovered two large containers.
Marco tried lifting the first one.
It split part of the outer bag.
He became angry.
Claudia said they could not carry both to the vehicle without being seen from the service road.
So they buried them again temporarily.
Deeper.
They intended to return the following night.
Then Evelyn said something important.
“Mom told me Ruby was the reason.”
The interviewer asked:
“The reason for what?”
“She keeps telling Mr. Alessio not to change the garden.”
That was true.
Ruby had repeatedly begged her father not to replace Isabella’s overgrown beds with new landscaping.
Alessio had finally agreed to restore rather than redesign them.
By preserving the old soil—
Ruby had unknowingly kept the buried evidence exactly where Marco and Claudia left it.
