Chapter 14 - The Garden Was Restored Without Erasing the Damaged Ground

The environmental cleanup took months.
The contaminated soil around the buried containers was removed professionally.
The greenhouse drainage was inspected.
Independent specialists tested the surrounding beds.
Some plants survived.
Others could not be saved.
Alessio originally wanted everything returned exactly to the way Isabella left it.
Then the horticulturist told him something important.
“A memorial garden cannot remain frozen in one year forever.”
Plants die.
Trees grow.
Soil changes.
New flowers replace old ones.
Preserving Isabella’s garden did not mean pretending time had stopped when she died.
Ruby understood before he did.
She chose which beds mattered most.
They replanted Isabella’s favorite pale flowers.
Kept her old climbing roses.
Added new varieties Ruby liked herself.
And beside the greenhouse, where investigators had excavated the buried containers, they left one small rectangle unplanted for a full season.
Not as a monument to Claudia and Marco.
As a reminder that the garden had survived being used as something it was never supposed to be.
