Chapter 1 - THE PHOTOGRAPH

Brandon Hayes smashed my wineglass onto the marble floor before I had time to step away. “Still alone?” he said, loud enough for half the Kansas City reunion ballroom to hear. “Guess nobody wanted my leftovers.” Seven years earlier, Brandon had been my fiancé. Vanessa Cole had been my best friend. Then both of them disappeared from my life in the ugliest way possible, and within a year they were together. I rebuilt quietly. No revenge. No public war. Just work, therapy, and eventually Caleb Whitmore. Vanessa shoved my shoulder and laughed. “Seven years, Claire. Still pathetic.” Then my six-year-old son Oliver charged through the crowd, knocked her hand away, and wrapped himself around me. “DON’T TOUCH MY MOM!” The ballroom went silent. Caleb entered through the doors seconds later, saw Brandon towering over us, and pulled him backward by the front of his suit jacket. “Put your hands near my wife again.” Brandon went pale because he recognized Caleb. Years earlier, a failed property deal with Whitmore Development had nearly destroyed Brandon’s family company. Brandon jerked free and pointed at Oliver. “Whose damn kid is that?”

Oliver stared back without blinking. Then he reached into his little jacket, pulled out an old photograph, and slammed it onto the dessert table. “Ask Vanessa.” Brandon looked down. His face drained of color. Vanessa saw the photo and froze. I took it. It showed Vanessa beside Brandon’s car outside a roadside motel seven years earlier. Beside her stood a heavily pregnant woman I had never seen. On the back was a date: three weeks before my wedding was supposed to happen. Beneath the date, someone had written: ASK BRANDON WHY SHE DISAPPEARED. I looked at Vanessa. “Who is she?” Vanessa’s mouth opened but no sound came. Brandon whispered, “You were never supposed to see that.” Then Oliver said, “Her name is Emily.” My blood ran cold. “How do you know?” He looked toward Caleb. “I found a letter with Grandpa Whitmore’s picture box.” Caleb’s father James had been dead two years. Oliver reached into his pocket again. “There’s another page.” Vanessa lunged toward him. Caleb stopped her. Oliver unfolded the paper. At the bottom, in James Whitmore’s handwriting, were four words: THE CHILD IS ALIVE.

And underneath was the name of a Kansas City hospital. The same hospital where Oliver had been born.
