Chapter 6 - SOPHIE’S FILE

Cole Civic Foundation paid investigator Mark Ellison to locate Sophie. Omaha. Des Moines. St. Louis. Then: SUBJECT LOCATED — NO CONTACT MADE. Vanessa had found Emily and Sophie when Sophie was two. Then yearly follow-ups. Confirm school enrollment. Check whether Brandon has made contact. Confirm family remains outside Kansas City. Why monitor a child? Mark eventually spoke under counsel. Vanessa never ordered him to threaten Emily. Never approach Sophie. She wanted to know whether they were safe and whether they planned to return. Then one expense: EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT — $6,200. Another: RELOCATION ASSISTANCE — $4,800. Vanessa had secretly sent money through Mark when Emily’s apartment building was sold. Emily did not know the source. Vanessa had lied to her, lied to Brandon, and still quietly helped. People are messy. Then Mark admitted Vanessa once asked: “Does Sophie look like him?” He said yes. Vanessa cried when confronted. Then she resigned from Cole Civic Foundation before the board could remove her. That mattered. She turned over all files. Thirty employees kept their jobs under interim management.

I had argued for that. Not to save Vanessa. To stop innocent people from paying for her choices. Then Emily told Sophie that Brandon was her biological father. Slowly. Age-appropriately. Then Sophie asked to meet me. We met in a park. She was serious. Blonde. Brandon’s eyes. “Are you mad at my dad?” “Sometimes.” “Do you hate him?” “No.” “Vanessa?” I paused. “Not exactly.” Then: “Why did everyone lie?” “Because they were scared of losing things.” “What things?” “Money. Jobs. Reputation. People.” She thought. Then: “Did they lose them anyway?” “Yes.” “That was dumb.” I smiled. “Yes.” Then Oliver met her. He liked her immediately. They were not siblings, but somehow they had both become children carrying adult history. Then Caleb opened another archive from James. An envelope marked: OLIVER. Inside was a DNA report. My stomach dropped. It compared Oliver to Brandon Hayes and Caleb Whitmore. Brandon excluded. Caleb consistent as biological father. James had secretly tested my infant son. Without my consent. The man who helped Emily had violated me too. And suddenly Caleb’s family was no longer standing safely on the side of “good.”
