Chapter 8 - VANESSA’S LAST SECRET

Vanessa had not fled. She drove to Topeka to meet the retired city notary, Denise Harper. Why? Because Denise had one original document no one else knew existed. A handwritten statement from Emily written before the false affidavit. It said: If Brandon wants contact with my daughter, I will not stop him. I only want Thomas Cole and Charles Hayes to stop threatening me. That changed everything. Emily had never intended to erase Brandon. She had wanted distance from the powerful adults around him. Then Denise admitted Thomas ordered her to destroy the statement. She did not. She kept it because she was afraid. Vanessa knew because her father once raged about “that stupid notary keeping copies.” For seven years Vanessa did nothing. Now she retrieved it. Then she brought it directly to Emily’s lawyer. No bargaining. No request for forgiveness. That mattered. Then she turned herself in to state investigators regarding the old $34,000 transfer and false statements. Some conduct was beyond limitation periods. Some was not. Civil liability remained. She accepted what came. Then she asked to speak to me.
I said yes. She looked exhausted. “No makeup?” I asked before I could stop myself. She laughed. First real laugh between us in seven years. Then: “I’m sorry.” “Specific.” She nodded. “For using your login.” Then: “For sleeping with Brandon.” Then: “For telling him Sophie died.” Then: “For speaking for Emily.” Then: “For humiliating you at the reunion because I saw Oliver’s photograph and panicked.” There. The reunion cruelty had been tactical. She wanted me to leave before the photo surfaced. That made it worse. Then: “I thought if I could keep the past sealed, the foundation employees, Dad’s legacy, Brandon, everything would stay standing.” “And me?” She cried. “I told myself you’d already rebuilt.” There. She once again decided I was strong enough to lose something. Then she said: “I loved you badly.” “I know.” Then: “Do you forgive me?” “No.” She nodded. Good. Then: “Can you someday?” “I don’t know.” She accepted that too. Then Brandon met Sophie. One hour. Emily present. Guardian present. No gifts. Sophie stared at him for a long time. Then: “Do you like pancakes?” Brandon laughed.
“Yes.” “Good.” That was the beginning. Then she asked: “Why didn’t you find me?” He answered: “Because I believed a lie that made my life easier.” Perfectly honest. Then: “Will you disappear now?” “No.” Then: “How know?” “You don’t. I have to show you.” There. Trust at current size. Then after meeting, Sophie asked if she could meet Oliver again. Good. Then Brandon asked whether he could seek legal visitation. Emily said: “Not yet.” He accepted. Good. Then Julia called me with another discovery. James Whitmore’s archives contained a property deed. The motel had not simply been bought by Whitmore Development. James had placed 15% of its future sale proceeds into a trust. Beneficiary: Emily Hart’s child. Sophie. No one had ever told her. The motel had since been sold for millions. Sophie’s trust might now be worth more than a million dollars. And suddenly every adult who claimed this story was never about money had to prove it.
