Chapter 5 - CHARLES HAYES
Charles Hayes was seventy-two, retired, and still capable of making an entire conference room feel like a board meeting. He denied everything until Brandon played the recording Vanessa had saved. Thomas Cole: Keep Claire quiet and I keep city off the motel. Charles: She doesn’t know anything. Thomas: Then keep it that way. Then: What about Emily? Thomas: Vanessa will handle her. Charles stopped denying. “I was protecting the company.” Brandon stared at him. “You were willing to blame Claire.” “She was an employee.” I laughed bitterly. An employee. Expendable. Then Brandon said, “Emily was an employee too.” Silence. “And Sophie was a baby.” Charles looked away. Then he admitted he had pressured Brandon not to tell me the truth before the wedding. Why? Scandal. Brandon said he had delayed two days, telling himself he would confess when he understood everything. Later. The word that had ruined half our lives. Then Hayes Hospitality corrected my old employment file and formally cleared me of any involvement in the transfer. I did not realize how badly I needed that until I saw my name beside:
NO WRONGDOING. Then Charles offered money. I refused the first settlement because it required confidentiality. No. Eventually the company paid damages without an NDA and published the corrected finding where necessary. Then Brandon wrote his first letter to Sophie. The guardian reviewed it. Emily approved. My name is Brandon. I am your biological father. I did not know you were alive. That is not your fault, and it is not your job to make me feel better about the years I missed. Sophie asked for a photograph. Then a video call. Five minutes. She looked at him and said, “You look old.” Brandon laughed through tears. Then she asked, “Would you have wanted me?” He answered carefully. “I would have wanted the chance to know you.” Good. Then: “Why did Vanessa say I died?” Brandon swallowed. “Because adults were scared and made bad choices.” “Did you?” “Yes.” “What bad choice?” “I lied to Claire. I cheated. And when things became complicated, I let other people tell me what happened instead of finding out myself.” Sophie nodded. “Okay.” Then the call ended. Brandon cried. Emily said Sophie wanted another call next week.
Then Caleb’s attorney found something new. Cole Civic Foundation had paid a private investigator for five years. Subject code: S.H. Sophie Hart. Vanessa had not merely known Sophie was alive. She had been secretly monitoring her. And no one knew why.
