Chapter 10 - Vanessa’s Story Fell Apart Under One Question
Michael confronted Vanessa.
This time, he recorded nothing secretly and tried no dramatic trap.
His attorney advised him simply to stop discussing the matter privately and preserve communications.
That proved enough.
Vanessa panicked.
She sent dozens of messages.
First:
The legal lab could be wrong too.
Then:
Nora probably manipulated this test.
Then:
You know what the original results said.
Michael answered one question:
Why were you in my locked office the night before those samples were mailed?
Vanessa did not respond for forty minutes.
Then:
I was working.
Security access logs showed no scheduled project work.
Michael asked:
Why did you mail the kits instead of me?
Vanessa:
Because you asked me to.
He had.
That by itself meant nothing.
Then his attorney obtained the office security footage through preserved company archives.

The chain became visible.
Once forensic comparison showed the tested samples were not from the Bennett children, the case changed entirely.
Vanessa eventually admitted opening the kits.
She initially claimed she only suspected Nora had tampered with them first.
That explanation made no sense.
Why would correcting tampering require replacing all five child samples with unrelated DNA?
Eventually the rationalizations ran out.
She admitted she wanted Michael to leave Nora.
She admitted she believed his loyalty to five children would keep him in the marriage even if he became unhappy.
She told investigators:
“I thought if he knew they weren’t his, he’d finally choose himself.”
The interviewer asked:
“But they were his.”
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.”
