Chapter 6 - Why Vanessa Wanted Five Children Erased
Vanessa wanted Michael.
That much was obvious.
But attraction alone did not explain the scale of what she did.
She also wanted a life uncomplicated by five children.
Michael was successful.
Comfortable.
Socially established.
Recently promoted into a partnership position.
Vanessa did not want to become the woman having an affair with a married father of five.
She wanted the story rewritten.
Michael as betrayed husband.
Nora as serial cheater.
Children as symbols of humiliation rather than responsibilities.
Vanessa understood something ugly about Michael.
Pride could overpower love if she wounded it deeply enough.
One accusation about one child might have made him defensive.
Five exclusions made him feel publicly emasculated.
She used shame.
Then positioned herself as the only person who did not pity him.
“I see you as a man, not a victim.”
That was one text investigators recovered later.
Another:
“You raised children who weren’t yours. You’ve already given them more than anyone could expect.”
That sentence helped Michael justify pulling away.
He did not stop paying support.
The law did not simply let him erase legal responsibility.
But emotionally?
He vanished.
Missed birthdays.
Stopped coming to school events.
Refused family counseling.
When Sophie asked why Dad didn’t visit anymore, I told her:
“Dad is dealing with adult confusion.”
I refused to tell a seven-year-old her father believed she belonged to someone else.
The older children understood more.
They saw the whispers.
They saw Vanessa appear beside Michael at events where I used to stand.
They figured it out.
