Chapter 5 - Vanessa Had Access To The Samples
The answer eventually came from something embarrassingly ordinary.
A building security camera.
Michael collected the cheek swabs at his office rather than at home because he did not want me interfering.
He brought the children individually over one weekend under the excuse of seeing his new office.
I hated myself for agreeing to those visits afterward.
But at the time I thought:
Maybe the result will finally end this.
Michael collected each swab.
Sealed each sample.
Placed the kits in a locked drawer inside his office.
He planned to ship them Monday.
Vanessa knew because she had helped order the testing kits.
On Sunday evening, she entered Michael’s office using her project access card.
Security logs confirmed it.
She remained inside twelve minutes.
On Monday morning, she volunteered to take outgoing packages downstairs because Michael was running late.
He handed her the five test kits.
She mailed them.
That sequence meant nothing to him then.
Years later, it became everything.
Vanessa had two opportunities to manipulate the samples.
Sunday night.
Monday morning.
The next question was what she replaced them with.
We found that answer through the testing company’s retained laboratory data.
The five child samples were not identical.
That was important.
But each excluded Michael decisively.
A forensic genetics consultant later compared available raw data after legal authorization.
The profiles did not belong to our children.
They belonged to five different individuals.
That meant Vanessa had not simply switched Michael’s swab.
She had replaced the children’s swabs.
Five unrelated samples.
Five guaranteed exclusions.
It sounded elaborate until investigators learned Vanessa volunteered with a community genealogy project that handled anonymous cheek-swab teaching kits.
She had access to unused demonstration samples from adults whose identities were not tied to Michael’s order.
She did not need to create convincing fake children.
She only needed DNA that was definitely not biologically related to Michael.
The laboratory correctly analyzed what it received.
Vanessa lied about whose DNA it was.
