Chapter 14 - Vanessa Lost Michael Long Before The Court Finished With Her
Vanessa’s consequences came slowly.
The physical slap at the funeral was straightforward enough.
Witnesses saw it.
Sophie’s cheek reddened but she suffered no serious injury.
That incident was handled separately.
The DNA manipulation involved more complicated questions.
Fraud.
Tampering.
Identity of biological samples.
Financial and family consequences.
Investigators had to establish exactly what statutes applied and what losses could be tied to her actions.
There was no magical one-day prison sentence.
No judge handing Nora the keys to Vanessa’s house.
The process took time.
Vanessa lost Michael almost immediately.
He moved out of the home they shared.
Not because discovering paternity suddenly made him loyal to me again.
Because the person beside him had manufactured the foundation of their relationship.
Vanessa begged him to remember their years together.
Michael’s response, according to what he later told the therapist, was:
“I don’t know which decisions were mine anymore.”
That was perhaps the first time he understood what he had done to me.
For three years, I had lived beneath a story someone else manufactured about my fidelity.
Now Michael lived beneath one about his entire second relationship.
The difference was that I did not enjoy his pain.
Pain does not become justice simply because the person suffering once hurt you.
Justice was truth entering the record.
Legal test results.
Corrected family narratives.
Consequences based on provable conduct.
