Chapter 11 - Mason Finally Admitted Why He Laughed

Mason asked Claire for one private meeting three months after the canceled wedding.

She refused at first.

Then agreed only with her therapist’s support, in a neutral office, with no expectation of reconciliation.

Mason looked different.

Less polished.

More tired.

He apologized for the financial deception first.

Claire listened.

Then she asked the question she cared about more.

“Why did you laugh?”

Mason looked down.

“You know why.”

“No. I want you to say it.”

Silence.

Then:

“Because Mom had been telling me for months that you needed to stop acting like you could walk away whenever you didn’t get your way.”

Claire stared at him.

“And you believed her?”

“I was angry.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Mason rubbed his hands together.

“I thought you were using your dad’s money as leverage.”

Claire almost laughed.

“I was stopping him from being used.”

“I know that now.”

“No. You knew it then. You just didn’t care enough.”

That landed.

Mason finally nodded.

Then admitted the ugliest part.

“When she ripped your blouse, I knew it was wrong. I laughed because if I defended you, I had to admit she had crossed a line I’d been helping her move for months.”

Claire went very still.

That was the answer.

Cowardice.

Not confusion.

Not shock.

Mason laughed because siding with Claire in that moment would have forced him to turn against the entire system from which he benefited.

His mother.

Her version of loyalty.

The business money.

The wedding momentum.

Everything.

Claire asked:

“Did you love me?”

“Yes.”

She believed him.

That was almost worse.

Because love had not been enough to make him brave.

Claire stood.

Mason looked panicked.

“Is that it?”

“Yes.”

“Claire—”

She stopped at the door.

“You didn’t lose me because your mother ripped my blouse.”

He looked at her.

“You lost me because you were standing behind me when she did it.”

May you like

Then Claire left.
