Chapter 14 - The Greenhouse Became A Place Claire Refused To Surrender

Nearly a year later, Miller Ridge hosted a charity tasting in the same Napa greenhouse.

Claire nearly declined to attend.

The last time she stood there, her blouse was torn open and the man she planned to marry laughed behind her.

But avoiding the building forever felt like giving Victoria ownership over a place she did not deserve to own emotionally.

So Claire went.

She wore a dark emerald dress.

No fiancé.

No father standing guard beside her.

Robert attended, but he stayed across the room talking with donors and let Claire move through the evening on her own.

That mattered.

She did not need rescuing now.

At one point Claire passed the gold-framed chairs.

New ones, probably.

Or perhaps the same style.

She couldn’t tell.

For half a second she remembered Mason hitting the floor.

Then she remembered something else.

Her own phone in her hand.

“Dad…”

The moment she stopped trying to manage the humiliation alone.

That was the more important memory.

Later in the evening, a young employee asked Claire about a vendor contract that seemed inconsistent with the budget.

The woman apologized almost immediately.

“Sorry. It’s probably nothing.”

Claire looked at her.

“No.”

The employee hesitated.

Claire smiled.

“If something doesn’t make sense, ask.”

That became the quiet institutional lesson from the whole disaster.

Not mistrust everyone.

Not assume fraud.

Ask.

Document.

Do not let social pressure make legitimate questions feel impolite.

Because the Hayes situation had grown partly from exactly that dynamic: too many people knew Victoria was difficult, Mason was defensive, and the invoices were unusual—but everyone wanted the wedding and partnership to stay smooth.

Smoothness had nearly cost much more than a canceled ceremony.
