Chapter 13 - Claire Had To Grieve A Marriage That Never Happened
Canceling a wedding does not erase love on schedule.
That was the part Claire hated most.
She knew Mason had betrayed her.
She knew marrying him would have been disastrous.
She knew every practical fact pointed toward leaving.
And still, for months, she woke with a physical ache where the future had been.
The dress remained boxed.
The invitations were canceled.
The greenhouse contract was converted into a smaller corporate event so the venue deposit would not be completely wasted.
Friends returned gifts.
Claire removed Mason from every shared account and planning file.
Each action was correct.
None felt victorious.
There were mornings she remembered Mason before Victoria’s pressure became dominant.
The man who brought her coffee during harvest.
The man who once drove three hours because she was stranded with a flat tire.
The man who stayed beside Robert in the hospital after a cardiac scare.
Those memories were real too.
That complicated grief.
Her therapist eventually told her:
“You do not have to prove he was always terrible in order to justify leaving after he became unsafe.”
That sentence helped.
Mason had loved her.
He had also chosen cowardice, entitlement, and his mother’s interests when loving Claire required risk.
Both truths could exist.
Claire returned fully to Miller Ridge work after several weeks away.
Not as revenge.
As herself.
She helped finish the audit, then deliberately stepped back from the Hayes negotiations so no one could claim she was using corporate authority to punish an ex-fiancé.
Robert respected that.
He also entered anger-management counseling after the punch.
Not because Claire asked him to.
Because he understood that protecting his daughter did not require making violence part of protection once she was already safe.
That mattered to Claire.
The men in her life had both been angry that day.
