Chapter 7 - Why Claire Still Walked Into The Greenhouse

People later asked why Claire hadn’t simply canceled immediately.

Because real lives do not change at the speed of hindsight.

Claire loved Mason.

That remained true even after she stopped trusting him.

She also did not know yet whether the relationship was salvageable. Robert’s accountants were still reviewing the joint venture. Mason promised he would tell Victoria they needed full disclosure. He asked for forty-eight hours.

Claire gave him that.

Then he asked for another day.

Then another.

Meanwhile, Victoria acted as though nothing had changed.

Wedding tastings continued.

Florals arrived.

Menus were finalized.

Claire found herself moving through preparations for a marriage she no longer knew would happen.

The greenhouse confrontation began because Claire finally refused one last request.

Victoria brought her a payment authorization covering remaining wedding-event expenses and several final “hospitality coordination” invoices routed through Hayes vendors.

Claire read them.

Then put the folder down.

“I’m not approving these.”

Victoria smiled thinly.

“You don’t approve anything. Robert does.”

“He asked me to review them.”

“That’s cute.”

Claire stood.

“This wedding pauses until the business review is done.”

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

“You don’t get to embarrass us four days before the ceremony because you suddenly think you’re an accountant.”

“I am not marrying into a family that thinks my father’s money is theirs to move around.”

Mason entered during the argument.

Claire looked straight at him.

“Tell her.”

Mason said nothing.

“Tell her the wedding pauses.”

Still nothing.

Victoria understood.

Her son had chosen silence.

So she became bolder.

She stepped closer to Claire and said, softly at first:

“You were useful when you knew how lucky you were.”

Claire stared at her.

“What?”

Victoria’s voice rose.

“You think being Robert Miller’s daughter makes you special? Without this family, you’re just another spoiled winery girl pretending she built something.”

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

Then Victoria shouted the line that opened Part 1.

“YOU REALLY THINK MY SON’S MARRYING TRASH LIKE YOU?”

And when she tore Claire’s blouse open, the act was not random madness.

It was the physical form of the hierarchy Victoria had been enforcing for months.

Know your place.

Obey.

Absorb the humiliation.

The wedding is too close.

The money is too committed.

You will not leave.

Then Mason laughed.

May you like

And Claire finally stopped wondering whether there was still a marriage worth saving.
