Chapter 1 - The Belly Avice Said Was A Pillow

Five-year-old Avice should have been looking at the fish.
That was why Cesare had brought her to the private aquarium gala in the first place.
The huge blue aquarium wall filled one side of the upscale lounge, casting moving reflections across the formal seating and carpet. Beyond the donor-room entrance, wealthy guests mingled beneath soft lighting while event equipment—garment racks, a rolling dive-equipment case, and lightweight display stands—waited along the edge of the room.
Avice sat quietly in her cream tulle dress, blonde hair tied into two neat pigtails.
Then something small fell near her chair.
A floral strap.
Or tag.
She slipped down and crawled toward it.
Diane immediately snapped from nearby.
“Avice, get off the floor.”
The child froze.
Cesare Hale was already moving.
At sixty-four, he was broad-shouldered, gray-haired, and not accustomed to watching adults bark at his granddaughter over harmless things.
He bent down and steadied Avice gently by the shoulders.
“You’re fine.”
Avice barely seemed to hear him.
She was staring across the lounge.
At Vanessa.
Julian’s wife stood near the aquarium wall in a silver evening gown, one hand resting over the large curve of what everyone believed was a heavily pregnant belly.
For six months, the Hale family had been planning around that baby.
Nursery renovation.
Trust discussions.
A future christening.
Julian had told everyone the child was his.
Avice’s future half-sibling.
Then Avice raised one small finger.
Her hand trembled.
“Grandpa…”
Cesare followed her gaze.
Avice pointed directly at Vanessa’s stomach.
“HER BELLY IS A PILLOW.”
The room seemed to stop.
Vanessa’s confident smile vanished instantly.
Not irritation.
Fear.
Cesare slowly stood.
He looked once at Vanessa.
Then at the floral strap on the carpet.
Something connected inside his mind.
He crossed the lounge toward the garment rack filled with evening gowns.
Vanessa moved.
“Cesare—”
Too late.
He grabbed the gowns and parted them forcefully.
Behind them hung a padded floral prosthetic belly.
Large.
Rounded.
Complete with visible securing straps.
The exact shape Vanessa had been wearing beneath her gown for months.
Julian stepped toward Vanessa.
Not Avice.
Not the evidence.
Vanessa.
“Dad… don’t make this public.”
Cesare stared at his son.
That sentence told him Julian already knew.
Then Ethan moved.
Vanessa’s thirty-five-year-old brother grabbed Cesare’s shoulder and swung.
Cesare slipped the punch.
Then drove one powerful right hand across Ethan’s face.
THUD.
Ethan flew backward into the rolling dive-equipment road case.
The case tipped.
Fins, masks, and lightweight gear spilled across the carpet.
No second punch.
Then Diane seized Avice by the cardigan and tried to drag her toward the donor-room exit.
Cesare reacted immediately.
He knocked Diane’s hand away.
Then struck her once across the face with an open palm.
SLAP.
Diane spun backward into the lightweight display stand and collapsed against the lounge seating.
Three bodyguards moved in and blocked the exits.
No one left.
Cesare picked up the fake belly.
Held it in one hand.
Avice remained safely behind him.
He looked directly at Vanessa.
“YOU HUMILIATED MY GRANDDAUGHTER FOR A PREGNANCY THAT NEVER EXISTED.”
Vanessa turned ghost-pale.
Julian stood beside her.
Her husband.
The supposed father of the unborn child.
But Vanessa did not look at him.
She looked straight across the room—
at Ethan.
Her brother.
Still down among the scattered dive equipment.
Cesare saw it.
And something colder than anger entered his face.
Because people look toward the person who knows the most dangerous part of the truth.
And whatever Ethan knew—
May you like
Julian clearly did not know all of it.
