Chapter 14 - Julian Lost Custody Time Before He Lost His Marriage
Cesare did not try to take Avice permanently from Julian.
Not immediately.
That would have turned protection into punishment.
Instead, family court imposed temporary structure.
Supervised contact.
Parenting evaluation.
Therapy.
A prohibition on Vanessa and Diane contacting Avice during the initial review.
Julian hated it.
Then slowly stopped fighting.
During one session, the therapist asked:
“What did you think Avice learned every time you told her not to embarrass Vanessa?”
Julian answered:
“That Vanessa’s feelings mattered.”
The therapist waited.
Julian’s face changed.
“More than hers.”
Exactly.
He had never said:
You matter less.
He had communicated it in dozens of smaller ways.
Months later, Julian apologized to Avice.
Not:
“I’m sorry you were upset.”
Not:
“I’m sorry things got confusing.”
He said:
“I should have listened when you told me things felt wrong. I kept asking you to make things easier for Vanessa instead of making sure you were safe.”
Avice listened.
Then asked:
“Can I still live with Grandpa sometimes?”
Julian swallowed.
“Yes.”
That answer mattered more than tears.
