Chapter 14 - Commander Reed Never Told the Story the Way Other People Did

The wedding story spread.
Of course.
Not nationally.
Not viral.
Real families gossip well enough without:
the internet.
One guest told another:
Julian insulted Clara’s dad.
Then:
Clara slapped him.
Then:
an Army colonel walked in and saluted the gardener.
By Thanksgiving the story had become:
Rich groom humiliates secret general.
Dad hated it.
He said:
“That is exactly the wrong lesson.”
“What’s the right one?”
“That I shouldn’t need stars to be treated decently.”
Yes.
Commander Reed agreed.
Months later we all attended a veterans’ charity dinner.
Someone said to Reed:
“Bet Julian felt stupid when he realized Arthur was a general.”
Reed answered:
“He should have felt stupid before that.”
Perfect.
Then he added:
“I saluted Arthur because I respect him.”
“Not because his old rank turned work clothes into a disguise.”
Dad heard.
Raised his glass.

That was all.
