Chapter 5 - Julian’s Family Worshipped Appearance

The Prescotts were wealthy.

Not private-jet billionaire wealthy.

Regional-business wealthy.

Julian’s grandfather started a commercial insurance brokerage.

His father expanded it into:

risk management,

employee benefits,

high-net-worth advising.

By the time Julian was thirty-three, the family business employed:

almost two hundred people.

Julian worked there.

Vice president.

Good salary.

Equity.

His parents owned a large home outside:

New Albany.

Country-club membership.

Charity boards.

Everyone dressed:

correctly.

Spoke:

correctly.

Attended:

correct events.

Nothing wrong with any of that.

The problem was what Julian believed those things:

proved.

At restaurants he noticed:

servers’ shoes.

At hotels he complained if:

valets were slow.

Once a contractor came to his condominium in muddy boots after an emergency pipe leak.

Julian later said:

“People like that have no awareness.”

The man had just:

stopped water from flooding three floors.

I said:

“He was working.”

Julian answered:

“So?”

May you like

That should have bothered me more.
