Chapter 6 - Dad Saw Julian Clearly Before I Did

Three months before the wedding, Arthur asked:

“Are you happy?”

Dangerous father question.

“Yes.”

“He treats you well?”

“Yes.”

Dad nodded.

Then:

“Does he treat other people well?”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Exactly what I asked.”

I became defensive.

“He’s direct.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“You don’t like him.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You don’t have to.”

Dad leaned against his kitchen counter.

Then said:

“I’ve worked for people who were polite upward and cruel downward.”

“Julian isn’t cruel.”

“Good.”

“Then I’m wrong.”

He dropped:

it.

That was another Arthur trait.

He gave information.

Then let:

you decide.

At the time, I wanted my father to say:

I approve.

He refused to perform:

approval

he did not feel.

May you like

I resented him for that.
