Chapter 13 - Chloe Recovered Faster Than Her Parents Did

Physically, Chloe did well.
Children can be astonishing.
A week after discharge, she wanted:
macaroni.
Two weeks:
playground.
Six weeks:
kindergarten orientation.
The surgical scars faded.
She occasionally complained:
“my tummy feels weird.”
Doctors monitored:
her.
No major long-term complications emerged.
Emotionally, we kept the story simple.
“You swallowed magnets.”
“They hurt your tummy.”
“Doctors fixed it.”
“Magnets are not toys for mouths.”
“Daddy made a mistake leaving them out.”
That last sentence was Ethan’s idea.
He told her himself.
“I’m sorry.”
Chloe said:
“Okay.”
Then asked:
“Can we get ice cream?”
Five-year-old forgiveness is not absolution.
It is:
present tense.
Ethan learned that.
He did not use her quick recovery to minimize:
anything.
Good.
Our home changed too.
Not into:
sterile fortress.
We still had:
science kits,
tools,
crafts.
Age-appropriate.
Supervised.
Locked hazards.
More importantly:
rules no longer belonged to:
me.
We stopped saying:
Mom says no.
Instead:
We decided.
May you like
That small language shift mattered.
