Chapter 4 - Ethan Lied Because He Came Home After Telling Me He Was Somewhere Else

Why was Ethan secretly home at 1:56 p.m.?

Not an affair.

Not drugs.

Not something melodramatic.

His job.

Ethan was regional sales director for a commercial lighting manufacturer.

For nearly a year, his company had been restructuring.

His territory shrank.

Two major clients went directly to corporate accounts.

His bonus fell.

Then, three weeks before Chloe’s surgery, Ethan learned his position would probably be eliminated.

He told me:

nothing.

Why?

Because I had just been promoted.

My compensation increased.

Again.

Ethan already felt like:

the lesser adult.

Not because I treated him as one intentionally.

Because he compared:

our roles.

I managed:

home logistics.

Childcare.

Insurance.

Emergency savings.

Investment accounts.

And now earned:

more.

Ethan became increasingly desperate to remain the parent who was:

easy,

fun,

unworried.

That afternoon he had returned home because he was scheduled for a private video call with HR at 2:30 and did not want colleagues nearby.

He forgot:

his laptop charging cable.

He planned to:

grab cable,

leave.

Chloe saw him.

“Daddy!”

He stopped.

Five minutes.

That was all.

She asked why the dining cabinet was locked.

He thought:

science lesson.

Fun Dad.

Make danger interesting.

He used:

the copied key.

Took out:

magnets.

Then received a text from:

HR.

His rideshare? Actually he likely drove. Let's keep car.

He realized he was late.

He left.

Magnets stayed.

Later, after his HR call confirmed the position elimination, he sat in his car for:

forty minutes.

Did not tell:

me.

Then I called:

“Chloe swallowed magnets.”

His first thought was:

the ones I left.

His second:

if Rachel knows, she will never forgive me.

So before entering the ER, Ethan chose:

another story.

Maybe Rachel opened:

the cabinet.

Maybe Chloe got them while Rachel was:

working.

Maybe responsibility could remain:

uncertain.

Fear became:

accusation.

That was why he grabbed me.

Not because he truly believed I did it.

Because if he could make me defend myself, he could delay facing:

himself.

That mattered more to me than the job loss.

A mistake could be forgiven someday.

May you like

What he did after the mistake revealed something deeper.
