Chapter 8 - Ethan Had Been Keeping Other Near-Misses From Me

After discharge, Chloe slept in our bedroom for:
two weeks.
Ethan stayed in the guest room.
My choice.
He did not argue.
Also good.
Then Susan called me.
“I need to tell you something.”
I immediately hated:
the sentence.
“What?”
“Ethan made me promise not to.”
My stomach tightened.
“Tell me.”
Three months earlier, Chloe had been helping Ethan in the garage.
He gave her:
a small cordless screwdriver.
Fine.
Then left a container of:
wood screws
open.
Chloe put one:
in her mouth
“as a joke.”
Susan saw.
Removed:
it.
Ethan begged:
“Don’t tell Rachel.”
Why?
“She’ll ban Chloe from the garage.”
I closed my eyes.
Another incident.
Two months before that:
Ethan let Chloe sit in the front seat of his parked car while he cleaned it.
She accidentally released the parking brake? Could be unsafe; parked on flat drive? Let's keep lower stakes: pressed garage-door remote while he was near mechanism? Hmm. Better a household hazard: he let her handle button batteries from a remote? That's too close. Need pattern of bypassing.
Maybe he let Chloe help change smoke detector battery and put coin cell batteries on table. Susan warned. No incident. Let's do.
Susan said:
“He once let her hold the little batteries from a key fob.”
I stared.
“Coin batteries?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I told Ethan it was dangerous.”
“That was not my question.”
Silence.
Then:
“I did not want to interfere in your marriage.”
There.
Adults protecting:
peace
again.
I became furious at:
Susan.
Then realized I had done a version of the same thing.
I had seen:
Ethan bypass rules.
I compensated.
Moved hazards.
Added locks.
Checked behind him.
Warned Chloe.
Instead of saying:
This parenting dynamic is unsafe.
Why?
Because every conversation ended with:
You don’t trust me.
You think I’m stupid.
You want to control everything.
I hated becoming:
nagging wife.
So I turned myself into:
silent safety department.
That worked until Ethan copied:
May you like
the key.
