Chapter 5 - Surgery Lasted Two Hours and Forty-One Minutes

No family argument mattered while Chloe was in surgery.
That became clear quickly.
Dr. Patel returned before they took her upstairs and explained:
several magnets appeared to have attracted across different intestinal loops.
They could not safely assume they would pass.
The pediatric surgical team recommended:
urgent removal.
We signed:
consents.
Not every possible complication entered my brain.
I remember:
perforation,
resection,
infection,
anesthesia.
Then Chloe was gone.
Parents become useless during surgery.
That is perhaps why guilt becomes so loud.
Nothing to:
do.
No fever to treat.
No medicine to give.
No child to hold.
Just:
wait.
Ethan sat across from me.
I could not look:
at him.
He whispered:
“Rachel.”
“No.”
“I need to explain.”
“No.”
“Please.”
“Our daughter is in surgery because you opened a locked cabinet, handed her magnets, walked away, then came here and blamed me.”
“I know.”
“I cannot hear your explanation right now.”
He stopped.
Good.
For once.
The surgeon came out after:
two hours and forty-one minutes.
I stood so quickly the room tilted.
“Is she okay?”
Dr. Patel nodded.
“She’s stable.”
I started crying before:
anything else.
They had removed:
all thirty-six magnets.
Several were attached across sections of bowel.
There were areas of pressure injury and one small perforation requiring:
repair.
No major bowel resection.
No catastrophic contamination.
They expected:
a difficult few days,
but a good recovery if complications did not develop.
I had to sit.
Ethan covered his face.
The surgeon said:
“You got her here quickly.”
That sentence saved me from a guilt spiral for:
twenty seconds.
Then I remembered:
I had been home.
The cabinet had been locked.
I still had not noticed the magnets until Chloe:
told me.
Could I have noticed sooner?
Maybe.
Parents can always invent a version where they are omniscient.
The medical team did not ask us to be omniscient.
They asked us to keep:
small high-powered magnets
away from children.
We had built exactly that system.
Then one adult deliberately bypassed:
it.
That fact was simple.

The marriage implications were not.
