Chapter 16 - MARGARET GETS SICK

Margaret was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer at seventy-two. Treatable. Surgery. Radiation.
No deathbed twist. Still enough to shake family.
Julian returned to help. Chloe brought Noah. I visited. Why?
Because Margaret had become someone important to me despite everything. Daniel understood.
Then hospital waiting room. Julian and I sat twenty feet apart.
No drama. After surgery, Margaret was groggy.
She looked at both of us and said: “Don’t make this weird.” We laughed. Good. Then recovery.
Margaret needed help at home. Julian offered to move in.
She said no. Control? No. Independence.
She hired nurse. Accepted visits.
Then she gave me one folder. I groaned.
She laughed. “Not a dossier.”
It was a simple estate summary. Assets. Contacts. Medical wishes.
She had shared same with Julian. Transparency.
Then: “I don’t want anyone learning about my life from a banker after I die.” Good.
Then she asked if I would serve as healthcare proxy backup after Julian. I said no.
Why? Too much entanglement.
She accepted. Chose close friend.
That was healthy. Then remission.
No tragedy required. Then she sold old family mansion voluntarily and moved to condo near city.
Julian helped pack. He found old photo of me and him at wedding.
Asked Margaret what to do. She said: “Ask Elena.”
He did. I said: “Keep it or throw it away. Your memory too.”
He kept. No symbol.

Then Margaret told me: “Five years ago I would have decided for both of you.” “Yes.”
“Annoying how much work growth is.” Very.
