Chapter 9 - CHLOE’S STORY

Chloe moved to Virginia temporarily for custody proceedings and corporate interviews involving expense records. We met three more times.
Our relationship remained awkward. She had knowingly dated a married man.
I did not forget. She also had been lied to.
Both. Then she told me how Julian described our marriage.
We slept in separate rooms. False.
We had no intimacy for years. False until final months.
I refused children. Partly true—we had postponed.
I controlled all money. False.
I belittled him. Sometimes true.
He said I loved career more. Interpretation.
Then Chloe said: “I thought you had agreed to divorce.” Why?
Julian showed her a draft email supposedly from me: I agree we should separate after your assignment. I never wrote it.
Then forensics. The email was a screenshot, not raw message.
Could be fabricated. Metadata? Image file created on Julian’s laptop.
There. Did he fake?
He admitted later assembling “mock correspondence” for legal planning. But he showed it to Chloe as real.
That was deliberate deception. Then Chloe cried.
“I built my whole life on a screenshot.” That line stayed.
Then her family. She had been a marketing consultant.
Not gold digger stereotype. She earned decent money.
Julian upgraded lifestyle. Then pregnancy.
Unplanned. She considered ending relationship.
He promised home and marriage. Then airport.
He wanted public transition. Again.
Shock as shortcut. Then I asked: “Why insult me as maid?”
She covered face. “Because I was insecure.”
There. No financial strategy needed.
Human cruelty. Then: “He told me you did nothing except wait around for him.”
So she used his story to feel superior. She apologized.
I said: “I accept apology. We are not friends.” She nodded. Good.
Then custody. Julian wanted shared.
Chloe wanted primary due international travel. He no longer worked abroad.
They negotiated. No dramatic deprivation of father.
Noah deserved both safe parents if possible. Then paternity confirmed formally, not because doubt but process.
Julian became active father. That mattered.
Then Chloe decided to move permanently to Virginia because family support and co-parenting. Not live with him.
Then she rented modest apartment. Margaret offered help for Noah’s trust. Chloe hesitated. Wise.
Independent lawyer reviewed. Margaret created education trust with no control over Chloe. Good. Learning.
Then I asked Margaret: “Are you buying access?” She looked offended.
Then thought. “Maybe I was tempted.”
There. Then she adjusted.
No visitation condition. No behavior condition.
Education funds independent. That was growth.
Then Chloe sent me a photo of Noah years later? Not yet.
Then one last piece. She had a voice note from Julian recorded during pregnancy.
“I just need Mom’s distribution, then everyone gets what they need.” Everyone.
Chloe house. Me settlement.
Him freedom. Noah security.
Julian thought money could organize humans into compliance. That was the central disease.
Then I stopped hating Chloe. Not forgave everything.
May you like
Just stopped making her central. Julian had made us rivals in his story.
We did not have to remain that way.
