Chapter 14 - Preston Eventually Admitted What He Chose
Two years later, during a parenting review, Preston finally said something Amelia believed.
Not because it repaired anything.
Because it was accurate.
“I knew Amelia would refuse if she understood the loan.”
The evaluator asked:
“So why did you present it on the wedding day?”
“Because I thought she wouldn’t want to blow up the marriage.”
“And when she still refused?”
Preston stared down at his hands.
“I sided with my mother.”
“Why?”
A long pause.
“Because if I admitted Amelia was right, I had to admit everything my mother and I had been doing was wrong.”
There it was.
Not love.
Not loyalty.
Cowardice.
He had kicked his wife because the alternative was confronting his own complicity.
The physical violence lasted seconds.
The moral failure began much earlier.
Amelia read the statement later and closed the file.
