Chapter 2 - The Baby Was Still There
Amelia left the Caldwell mansion in an ambulance.
Not with Preston.
Not with Veronica.
A member of the wedding staff called emergency services after finding her in the foyer rinsing her eyes with bottled water.
Preston tried to follow.
Amelia said no.
That was the first boundary of her new marriage.
It lasted longer than the marriage itself.
At the hospital, doctors treated the chemical irritation first.
The spray had caused significant redness and burning but no deep chemical injury.
Then came the pregnancy assessment.
Amelia lay staring at the ceiling while an ultrasound technician moved carefully and said almost nothing.
That silence terrified her.
Finally a physician came in.
“At this point, we are not seeing evidence of an acute pregnancy complication.”
Amelia exhaled for what felt like the first time in an hour.
“Is the baby okay?”
“At eight weeks, we can confirm the pregnancy is intrauterine and currently viable. But after trauma, we watch carefully. If you develop bleeding, worsening pain, dizziness, or anything concerning, you come back immediately.”
Amelia nodded.
Currently viable.
Not a promise.
But enough to hold onto.
She placed one hand over her abdomen.
There was someone there.
A child she had not known existed when she walked down the aisle.
A child Preston had kicked without knowing.
The distinction mattered medically.
Emotionally, it did not erase anything.
He had kicked her deliberately.
That alone was enough.
Later that night Preston called fourteen times.
Amelia declined every call.
Then came a text.
I didn’t know.
She stared at it.
No apology.
No acknowledgment that striking his wife would have been unacceptable even if she were not pregnant.
Just:
I didn’t know.
Amelia turned the phone face down.
A minute later another message arrived.
Mom went too far. So did you. We all need to calm down before this becomes something it doesn’t need to be.
Amelia read that twice.
Then forwarded both messages to an attorney recommended by the hospital social worker.
Because something had changed inside her.
Not because of the baby alone.
