Chapter 3 - The Folder Veronica Wanted

The folder arrived the next morning.

One of the mansion’s longtime staff members brought Amelia’s wedding luggage to the hospital after Amelia’s attorney requested it be released.

The black document folder was still inside.

Veronica had been trying to get it from her when the confrontation started.

Amelia had nearly signed the papers earlier that afternoon.

Preston presented them after the ceremony.

He called them:

“Standard family paperwork.”

The first pages were ordinary.

Insurance beneficiary changes.

Emergency-contact forms.

Travel permissions.

Then Amelia reached a document titled:

Post-Marital Property Clarification and Spousal Authorization.

She read contracts for a living.

Not as an attorney.

As a project-finance analyst for a regional infrastructure firm.

Words mattered to her.

The agreement would transfer Amelia’s interest in a townhouse she had purchased before meeting Preston into a new marital holding company controlled by Preston.

That alone made her stop.

Then she found another provision.

The holding company could pledge the property as collateral for borrowing.

Without requiring Amelia’s separate signature on each loan.

She looked at Preston.

“Why would my townhouse be collateral for your company?”

“Our company.”

“I don’t own your company.”

“You will after we’re married.”

“We already are married.”

He smiled.

“You know what I mean.”

Then Veronica entered.

She said Amelia was embarrassing Preston.

Said wealthy families structured assets efficiently.

Said refusing proved Amelia “was still thinking like an outsider.”

Amelia kept reading.

There was a second authorization.

A line of credit.

Maximum principal:

$475,000.

Secured partly against Amelia’s premarital property once transferred.

“Absolutely not,” she said.

That was when Veronica’s politeness disappeared.

Because the papers were not symbolic.

They needed Amelia’s signature.

And they needed it quickly.

The lender’s approval expired at midnight.
