Chapter 11 - Brooke Finally Told Amanda The Part Richard Never Would

Amanda and Brooke met once voluntarily through their attorneys.
No shouting.
No slaps.
Amanda later considered that conversation more damaging to Richard than anything that happened in the living room.
Brooke admitted she had been involved with Richard intermittently for nearly a decade.
After Tyler’s birth, their relationship became less romantic for several years and more like a secret co-parenting arrangement.
Then, after Ethan was born, the affair resumed.
Amanda asked why.
Brooke answered honestly.
“Because he kept telling me he’d fix it.”
“Fix what?”
“That Tyler wouldn’t be hidden anymore.”
Amanda stared at her.
Brooke continued.
Richard promised repeatedly that he would eventually tell Amanda the truth. Every time he delayed, he compensated Brooke with more money, more time, or more access.
Then he began telling Brooke something else.
That Amanda was cold.
Controlling.
More invested in her business than her marriage.
That Ethan received everything because Amanda demanded it.
Brooke wanted to believe that version.
It made her less guilty.
She said quietly:
“I thought you were the reason he couldn’t be Tyler’s father publicly.”
Amanda laughed once without humor.
“And I thought you were just the woman sleeping with my husband.”
They looked at each other.
Both had been given different lies by the same man.
Brooke was not innocent. She knew Richard was married and continued the affair. She had also allowed Tyler to treat Ethan with growing hostility and had said ugly things in Amanda’s home.
But the conversation clarified the engine underneath everything.
Richard’s greatest skill had not been hiding two families.
It had been making each family believe the other one was the reason he could not behave honestly.

That system ended the day both women compared notes.
