Chapter 9 - Ethan Asked The Question That Broke Amanda
Ethan recovered physically within days.
The redness faded.
The crying at night lasted longer.
One evening Amanda was sitting beside his bed when he asked:
“Is Tyler Dad’s kid?”
Amanda had been advised by the family therapist not to lie if Ethan asked directly.
“Yes,” she said.
Ethan thought about it.
“Like me?”
“Yes.”
“Then why was he secret?”
Amanda swallowed.
“That was an adult decision your dad made a long time ago.”
“Because Tyler was bad?”
“No.”
“Because Brooke was bad?”
“No.”
Ethan frowned.
“Because Dad was bad?”
Amanda almost answered too quickly.
Instead she said, “Dad made some very wrong choices.”
Ethan pulled his dinosaur blanket closer.
Then came the question she had not prepared for.
“Does he like Tyler more because he didn’t get him before?”
Amanda’s throat tightened.
She moved closer.
“Your dad’s guilt has made him behave unfairly. That is not because you are less lovable.”
“But he told you not to touch Tyler.”
Amanda closed her eyes.
Children remember the sentences adults wish they could erase.
“I know.”
“He didn’t ask if I was okay.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Amanda could not protect Richard from the answer without hurting Ethan again.
“Because in that moment, your dad made the wrong choice.”
Ethan nodded slowly.
Then he asked, “Are you going away again?”
Amanda knew he meant business travel.
She promised she would stay home for a while.
But more importantly she said:
“Even when I travel again someday, you should still be safe in your own home. That’s the part the adults have to fix.”
Ethan accepted that answer.
Amanda did not.
Not yet.
Because the more clearly her son spoke, the more she understood that Richard’s betrayal had not merely damaged a marriage.
