Chapter 14 - Richard Lost Both Versions Of The Family

Richard initially believed Amanda would cool down.

Then he believed Brooke would remain loyal.

Both assumptions failed.

Amanda proceeded with divorce.

Brooke ended the affair too.

Not because she suddenly became morally transformed, but because learning how much Richard lied about the money, Amanda, and his actual ability to “build a life” with her destroyed the fantasy Brooke had used to justify waiting.

She moved with Tyler to a smaller apartment she could actually afford with her own salary and legitimate child-support arrangements.

Richard finally acknowledged Tyler legally and established formal paternity and support rather than secret payments.

That was overdue.

He also entered therapy with Tyler separately. The boy needed help understanding why his father had hidden him and why none of that entitled him to hurt Ethan.

Ethan had no contact with Tyler for a long time.

Amanda insisted on that.

Years later, professionals might decide some carefully structured contact was possible.

For now, safety mattered more than symbolic family unity.

Richard saw Ethan only under a temporary parenting plan while the family evaluator reviewed what had happened inside the house and why Richard had failed so badly to intervene. He was not stripped of fatherhood forever. But neither did everyone pretend biological status excused conduct.

For the first time in his life, Richard lived with consequences he could not pay somebody else to absorb.

No Amanda arranging the house.

No Brooke accepting promises.

No secret corporate expenses.

No child believing another child was responsible for his pain.

Just Richard.

And the truth he had delayed for nearly a decade.
