Chapter 6 - Amanda’s Company Had Been Paying For The Affair
The financial reversal started with one credit-card statement.
Amanda founded Whitman Hospitality Design eleven years earlier. By the time she married Richard, the company had grown from six employees to nearly fifty. She retained seventy-two percent ownership and served as CEO. Two minority investors held most of the remaining equity.
Richard did not own the company.
He had never been a founder.
But after their marriage, he gradually became involved in operational finance as the company expanded into property design and management. Eventually Amanda appointed him chief administrative officer, partly because she trusted him and partly because he was genuinely competent with vendor systems.
That gave him access.
Not ownership.
The distinction became very important.
Amanda’s corporate attorney, Melissa Grant, froze Richard’s administrative credentials less than an hour after Amanda called her from the pediatrician’s parking lot.
Then the finance team began reviewing unusual spending.
The first problem was a luxury apartment in Boston.
The lease was held through a vendor services LLC supposedly used to house visiting consultants.
The apartment’s actual occupant was Brooke.
Whitman Hospitality Design had paid the rent.
Then came the car.
A black Range Rover listed as a client-transport vehicle.
Brooke drove it daily.
Then Tyler’s private-school tuition appeared indirectly through “educational consulting support” paid to a foundation connected to the school.
Then vacations.
Restaurants.
Clothing.
Summer camps.
Furniture.
Insurance.
Not every expense was clearly fraudulent. Some traveled through Richard’s compensation benefits or household accounts he could legitimately use.
But enough had been charged to company budgets under false or misleading descriptions to create a serious problem.
Amanda sat in the conference room looking through the preliminary report.
Then remembered Brooke standing in her living room saying:
Richard takes care of us.
No.
Richard had been using Amanda’s company to do it.
That was why Amanda’s unfinished sentence terrified him.
Because unlike the affair, which could be denied, minimized, or emotionally reframed, accounting systems kept records.
