Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO ALMOST SIGNED FOR ME

Alicia Grant, the insurance underwriter, testified at a pretrial hearing.
She remembered Ryan because the application bothered her.
“He kept speaking for Emily.”
Did she talk to me?
No.
She tried.
The phone number was Ryan’s business line.
Then Ryan asked whether spouse consent could be verified through a representative.
Alicia said no.
Then he submitted a letter from “Emily Carter” stating pregnancy-related anxiety made telephone interviews difficult.
Signature:
Mine.
Forged.
Alicia still refused.
Then Ryan contacted an independent insurance broker named Dana Webb.
Dana got further.
She scheduled a home appointment.
Ryan canceled twice.
Third time, he told Dana I was sleeping.
Dana said she could wait.
Ryan became irritated.
Then he asked:
“If my wife signs an authorization and I notarize witness identity, is that enough?”
Dana said no.
She later emailed her compliance department because the situation felt wrong.
That email existed before my bathroom incident.
Independent warning.
Then Dana revealed something else.
Ryan asked whether a policy could remain in force if the insured later became mentally incompetent.
Again.
Same question to Susan.
Same theme.
The prosecution carefully avoided turning that into a murder theory.
Instead, they used it to show why the mental-health planning mattered financially.
If Ryan could become my legal agent, property and insurance control became easier.
Then Dana testified:
“I told him incapacity does not erase the insured person’s rights and that he needed counsel.”
Ryan replied:
“That’s not what I’m asking.”
“What were you asking?”
“He wanted to know who could cancel the policy.”
The courtroom went silent.
Then defense established:
No policy was ever issued.
No premium paid.
No death benefit existed.
Correct.
Important.
Still, Ryan’s repeated efforts mattered.
Then Maya asked me privately:
“Do you think he wanted you dead?”
I answered:
“No.”
That surprised her.
“Why?”
“Because I think he wanted me present and controllable.”
That felt more accurate.
Ryan did not build a plan for my absence.
He built a plan for my obedience.
The insurance was not a murder device.
May you like
It was another attempt to turn my existence into collateral.
Somehow that felt more horrifying because it fit everything else.
