Chapter 12 - RYAN PUT MY ANGER ON TRIAL

At trial, the defense opened with me.

Not Ryan.

Me.

They played the mug video.

Me throwing ceramic against the kitchen wall.

They showed texts:

I hate you.

Sometimes I want to disappear with the baby.

I can’t breathe when you’re around.

They showed my hidden cash withdrawals.

My secret consultation with legal aid.

My photos of Ryan’s office.

Then the slap.

I admitted it.

Eight months before pregnancy.

Ryan blocked the door during an argument.

I slapped him.

He moved.

No police.

No injuries.

Still wrong.

The defense attorney asked:

“So you have used violence in this marriage?”

“Yes.”

“Destroyed property?”

“Yes.”

“Planned to take the child away?”

“I planned to leave because I was afraid.”

“Secretly?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“And you want this jury to believe Ryan was the only controlling person?”

I paused.

“No.”

That surprised them.

“I controlled what information I gave him because I was afraid of what he did with information.”

Then:

“I did things I regret. That doesn’t make his signatures mine.”

Silence.

The case came back to consent.

Again.

Then Dr. Feld testified.

She did not call me perfect.

She described isolated reactive aggression.

Anxiety.

Trauma.

Intact cognition.

Corroborated financial concerns.

Then Susan testified.

Defense attacked her forged bank statement from twenty-three years earlier.

She admitted it.

Then the warehouse subsidy.

Admitted.

Then prosecutor asked:

“Why are you testifying against your son?”

Susan answered:

“I’m not testifying against my son. I’m testifying about what I saw and what I did.”

That line mattered.

No family loyalty performance.

Then Alicia Grant.

Dana Webb.

Kevin Brooks.

Priya Shah.

Evan Mercer.

Each had a piece.

No single dramatic witness.

Then Ryan took the stand.

His attorney looked unhappy.

I knew why.

Ryan believed explaining himself could still make people agree with him.

That belief had controlled our marriage.

Now twelve jurors were about to meet it.
