Chapter 11 - THE SECRET INSIDE WESTBRIDGE
Westbridge Commons looked like a failed development.
It was also hiding a family betrayal.
Priya found a $62,000 transfer from Westbridge to an account controlled by Susan.
I stared at the bank record.
Susan?
The woman turning the bathroom door?
The woman helping expose Ryan?
She denied knowing.
Then records showed the account was an old trust account Thomas created years earlier.
Susan had signing authority.
Money arrived.
Then moved out two days later to pay property taxes and legal fees on a commercial lot still owned by Thomas’s estate.
Susan had authorized the outgoing payment.
She had seen the deposit.
Why did she not tell us?
She said she thought it was estate money.

CARTER ESTATE REIMBURSEMENT.
Ryan had labeled it to look ordinary.
Was Susan lying?
Forensic evidence showed she did not communicate with Ryan about the transfer.
But her silence about the account gave his defense another opening.
Then Priya found the real reason.
Thomas’s estate still owned a warehouse Ryan’s company used at below-market rent.
Susan, as estate executor, had allowed it.
That subsidy helped Ryan’s business survive for years.
She never disclosed it to me.
Why?
“Family.”
Again.
Ryan’s business was not independent.
It rested on hidden family support.
Cheap warehouse.
Old equipment.
Loans from James? No, Thomas was dead.
Estate favors.
Susan’s quiet help.
Then Ryan told lenders his company paid fair-market overhead.
False.
That inflated profitability.
Westbridge financing relied partly on those misleading statements.
Susan had not committed the lending fraud.
But her informal family support helped create the illusion.
She looked destroyed.
“I thought I was helping him stand on his own.”
I said:
“You were holding the floor under him.”
She nodded.
Then we learned the warehouse was collateral for one of Thomas’s old estate debts.
If Ryan’s business failed completely, Susan risked losing it.
Now her motives looked messy.
Did she come to the bathroom to protect me?
Yes.
Did she also have financial reasons to stop Ryan’s scheme before it dragged the estate into disaster?
Also yes.
That was the twist I hated most.
Because I wanted Susan to be pure after Ryan proved so impure.
She was not.
