Chapter 13 - RYAN EXPLAINS TOO MUCH

Ryan admitted the forged signatures.

He called them “administrative shortcuts.”

The prosecutor asked:

“Administrative for whom?”

Silence.

Then the deed.

“I believed the rental should be part of the family assets.”

“Was it titled to you?”

“No.”

“Did Emily agree to transfer it?”

“Not in writing.”

“Did she agree verbally?”

Ryan hesitated.

“She said it felt like ours.”

“That was not my question.”

“No.”

Then the power of attorney.

He said he prepared it in case pregnancy complications made me unable to manage things.

“Did Emily request that?”

“No.”

“Did she sign it?”

“No.”

“Did you attach her copied signature?”

“Yes.”

Then the psychiatric referral.

“I was genuinely worried.”

“Were you also planning to use it in custody?”

“Yes.”

Then the insurance.

He denied sinister intent.

“I was trying to secure financing.”

“Using your wife’s life?”

“Using a policy.”

“Without her consent?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

Then the bathroom.

He admitted:

Wrist.

Hair.

Forcing me down.

Shoving me into the cabinet.

Blocking exit.

Threat.

He denied trying to injure the baby.

I believed that.

The prosecutor asked:

“Why did you do it?”

Ryan looked at me.

“Because she was leaving.”

“Was she allowed to leave?”

“Yes.”

“Then why stop her?”

“I thought she was making a catastrophic decision.”

“For whom?”

“Our family.”

“Did Emily believe leaving was catastrophic?”

“No.”

“So whose judgment controlled?”

Ryan stopped.

There.

That was the whole case.

Then the prosecutor showed the spreadsheet.

If Emily cooperates.

If Emily leaves.

If Emily hospitalized.

If Emily incapacitated.

“Why did you create this?”

“I plan for risks.”

“Was Emily a wife or a risk variable?”

Ryan looked down.

Then one final email.

Evan:

You sure she’s okay with rental going in?

Ryan:

She will be.

Prosecutor:

“What did you mean?”

Ryan said:

“I meant I could convince her.”

“How?”

Silence.

Then:

“I don’t know.”

The prosecutor waited.

Ryan finally said:

“Pressure.”

There.

No dramatic confession.

Just the word beneath years of behavior.

Then he started crying.

“I thought if I could control enough, nobody could leave.”

The prosecutor asked:

“And what did that turn your wife into?”

Ryan whispered:

“Something I managed.”

I looked down.

May you like

Not because victory.

Because grief.
