Chapter 1 - The words Marcus wasn’t ready to hear

Warm afternoon sunlight flooded the botanical conservatory through towering glass walls, turning the pale marble floor almost gold beneath hanging greenery and elegant cream dining tables.

The Carter family reception had been going on for nearly an hour.

Guests in formal clothes gathered beneath the glass ceiling with champagne in hand, talking quietly while servers moved between gold chairs and floral arrangements.

Eight-year-old Emily Carter stood near one of the tables in a pale-pink dress.

She was crying.

Marcus Carter stood directly over her.

At forty, he looked polished in his charcoal tuxedo, but there was nothing controlled about his expression.

“STOP CRYING. NOBODY HERE GIVES A DAMN ABOUT YOU.”

Emily flinched.

Then Marcus slapped her.

One hard open-palm strike across the cheek.

Emily recoiled sideways, crying harder.

Several guests froze.

Then Victoria Carter rushed into the room.

She dropped immediately beside Emily and pulled her daughter into both arms.

“Baby, I’ve got you.”

Emily clung to her.

Marcus remained standing behind them, breathing hard and looking almost irritated by the attention.

Victoria slowly released Emily but kept her safely behind her.

Then she stood.

She walked directly toward Marcus.

They stopped face-to-face.

“MOVE,” Marcus said coldly. “THE BRAT NEEDED TO LEARN HER PLACE.”

Victoria’s expression turned flat.

Ice-cold.

Then she drove one hard front kick into his upper torso.

Marcus lost his balance and crashed backward onto the marble floor.

Gasps moved through the reception hall.

Emily remained several feet behind Victoria.

Marcus stayed down, stunned.

Victoria stood over him.

Her hands were trembling, but her voice was perfectly steady.

“FROM NOW ON, DON’T EVER EXPECT TO SEE YOUR DAUGHTER AGAIN.”

Marcus froze.

His anger vanished.

For a second, the room seemed to disappear around him.

He slowly turned his head toward Emily.

Then back toward Victoria.

The color drained from his face.

“Wait… what do you mean?”

Victoria said nothing.

She looked at him long enough to confirm that he had understood the implication.

Then she turned back toward Emily.

Marcus remained on the floor.

Staring at the little girl he had just struck.

Because nine years earlier, before Emily existed, there had been one night Victoria and Marcus had spent the rest of their lives pretending meant nothing.

May you like

And Marcus had just realized it might have meant everything.
