Chapter 11 - The marriage could not survive what the DNA uncovered
Victoria did not leave Marcus because the DNA test proved he was Emily’s biological father.
She left because the test revealed how badly they had both handled truth.
Her lie dated back eight years.
Marcus’s resentment had been building for nearly as long.
Their marriage began with grief, guilt, and a secret neither person had ever processed honestly.
The DNA result did not create that structure.
It exposed it.
Marriage counseling lasted four months.
Not to save the marriage at any cost.
To determine whether there was enough honesty left to make any future possible.
Marcus admitted he resented Evan.
Victoria admitted she had romanticized Marcus’s support after Evan died because accepting help felt easier than rebuilding life alone.
Marcus admitted part of him liked marrying Victoria because it made him feel as though he had finally been chosen over his brother.
Victoria was horrified.
“Evan was dead.”
“I know.”
“That wasn’t winning.”
“I know that now.”
She also admitted something harder.
When she married Marcus, she thought the old night between them had finally become irrelevant.
Instead it remained under everything.
Their attraction.
Their shame.
Emily’s paternity.
The brother neither could ask forgiveness from.
Eventually Victoria said:
“I don’t know whether we ever built a marriage that belonged only to us.”
Marcus had no answer.
Then came the issue that ended any realistic chance of reconciliation.
Emily was afraid of him.
Victoria could forgive parts of the past if she chose.
She could not ask her child to share a home with a man she feared so Victoria could prove the adults were capable of repair.
They separated permanently.
The divorce followed.
No dramatic destruction of Marcus’s wealth.
No magical transfer of family property.
A prenuptial agreement governed much of their separate property.
Shared marital assets were divided through ordinary negotiation.
The central loss was relational.
Marcus lost his marriage.
He lost automatic access to Emily.
