Chapter 6 - Victoria finally admitted what she had hidden
Marcus was not the only adult who had to answer for past choices.
Victoria did too.
During a mediated session with separate attorneys present, Marcus asked her directly:
“Why didn’t you test when you got pregnant?”
Victoria could have blamed the era.
Fear.
Her marriage.
Timing.
Instead she answered plainly.
“Because I wanted Evan to be the father.”
Marcus looked at her.
“That’s not the same as knowing he was.”
“I know.”
“You told me there was no possibility.”
“Yes.”
“That was a lie.”
Victoria took a breath.
“Yes.”
The word was painful because it was true.
She had not knowingly assigned another man’s child to Evan.
She genuinely believed the pregnancy timing made Evan more likely.
But she knew Marcus had been possible.
She closed the question because the alternative threatened the reconciliation she desperately wanted.
“I was afraid if I tested,” she said, “I could lose my marriage before we had any chance to repair it.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“So you let my brother raise my daughter.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“Do not talk about Emily like property.”
Marcus went silent.
She continued.
“Evan raised his daughter. That is what she was to him every day of his life.”
“But genetically—”
“Genetically she is yours.”
Victoria nodded.
“And I should have dealt with that possibility honestly eight years ago.”
She did not dodge it.
“If Evan were alive, I would owe him an apology I can never give.”
That was one of the deepest consequences.
Evan never had the choice to decide what biological uncertainty meant to him.
Victoria had made that decision for him.
She would carry that.
But Marcus was not allowed to use her past deception to minimize his present behavior.
Victoria looked at him.
“I hid a truth from you.”
“Yes.”
“You hit an eight-year-old child.”
Marcus looked away.
“They are both wrong. They are not the same wrong.”
No one in the room disagreed.
Then Marcus said something unexpected.
“I think I hated her because she looked like him.”
Victoria stared.
He meant Evan.
