Chapter 1 - THE MOMENT HE CHOSE HER

Alejandro did not look at me when he made the decision.
He snatched the surgery consent from Dr. Ramirez’s clipboard, crossed the private hospital suite, and threw it onto Mariana’s bed.
“Operate on her,” he said. “My wife can wait.”
The room went silent.
I was still wearing the red dress the paramedics had cut open at the side.
My left wrist was wrapped in white bandages.
Bruises darkened my jaw and collarbone.
Three hours earlier, I had been pulled from a wrecked car after someone ran a red light and struck the passenger side.
My spleen was bleeding.
Dr. Ramirez had already explained that delaying surgery could become dangerous.
Mariana sat upright in the second hospital bed near the window.
She wore a navy maternity-style dress, though no one had said she was pregnant.
She held one hand over her abdomen.
Alejandro stood beside her.
Not me.
Her.
I pushed the blanket away and stood.
Pain burned through my ribs.
A nurse reached for me.
I kept walking.
Alejandro finally turned.
“Sofia, lie down.”
I crossed the room and slapped him.
His head snapped sideways.
The sound seemed louder than the heart monitor.
“You stopped being my husband today.”
He touched his cheek.
Shock came first.
Then anger.
He reached toward me.
I stepped back.
Slowly, I removed my wedding ring.
My fingers shook, but I did not.
I took the clipboard from Dr. Ramirez, signed my own consent, and placed the ring on top.
The gold band rolled once and stopped beside my name.
Alejandro stared at it.
“What are you doing?”
“Choosing myself.”
Before he could answer, Dr. Ramirez entered with a new set of test results.
His expression was different now.
Tighter.
He looked directly at Alejandro.
“Mr. Montes... Miss Ledesma is pregnant.”
Alejandro froze.
Mariana lowered her eyes.
She did not deny it.
I watched his face.
Surprise.
Fear.
Calculation.
Not joy.
That mattered.
I reached into my handbag and removed a sealed envelope from my attorney.
I had been carrying it for two weeks.
I placed it beside him on the bed.
“Don’t follow me.”
Then I turned.
Every step toward the hospital door hurt.
I did not look back.
The door closed behind me.
In the hallway, my knees nearly failed.
Dr. Ramirez caught my arm.
“You still need surgery.”
“I know.”
“We have to go now.”
I nodded.
As the orderlies pushed my bed toward the operating room, I heard shouting from the suite.
Mariana.
“You said she already signed everything!”
Alejandro answered too quietly for me to hear.
Then his voice rose.
“Where is the original?”
Original what?
The operating-room doors opened.
Before they closed, I saw Alejandro run into the hallway carrying the sealed envelope.
He looked terrified.
Not because I was leaving.
Because of whatever he thought was inside.
Then my phone vibrated on the mattress.
A message from my lawyer, Calvin Reed.
DO NOT LET ALEJANDRO OPEN THAT ENVELOPE ALONE. THE PATERNITY FILE IS INSIDE.
I stared at the words.
Paternity file.
Not divorce papers.
Not asset documents.
May you like
Paternity.
Then anesthesia pulled the ceiling away.
