Chapter 6 - THE BORDER ROAD

Federal agents coordinated with border authorities.

Alejandro abandoned the SUV twenty miles north of the crossing.

Inside was the infant seat.

Empty.

A bottle still warm.

Dr. Vale’s blood on the passenger door.

They had changed vehicles.

Elena knew of a private airfield used by Rivera Biotech executives years earlier.

A plane filed a medical transport plan to Baja California.

Passenger list:

Dr. Samuel Reed.

Elena Montes.

Infant patient.

False names.

Priya secured an emergency grounding order.

The plane began taxiing before agents reached it.

I watched through a live tactical feed.

A black van approached the runway.

Alejandro stepped out carrying Rose.

Vale followed with a medical bag.

Then another vehicle blocked the plane.

Mariana was driving.

Seven months pregnant.

She had left protective housing.

She stood in front of the van.

Alejandro shouted at her.

She raised her phone.

The call connected to me.

“Tell him,” she said.

“Tell him what?”

“That I changed the beneficiary.”

Alejandro heard through speaker.

His face changed.

Mariana had signed a cooperation agreement transferring any claimed interest in my trust back to independent court control.

Her unborn child could no longer be used by Derek—by Alejandro, sorry. Need consistent. Alejandro could no longer use Mateo to control assets through her.

She also signed a declaration admitting her role.

No leverage.

Alejandro charged toward her.

Agents moved.

Vale grabbed Rose and ran toward the plane.

I watched the feed helplessly.

Mariana backed away.

Alejandro caught her arm.

She struck him with the phone.

He shoved her.

She fell against the hood.

Agents tackled him.

Vale reached the plane stairs.

Elena appeared from behind the hangar.

My sister.

She had followed investigators.

She stood between Vale and the cabin.

“Give me Rose.”

Vale laughed.

“You think they’ll let you keep her?”

“No.”

That answer surprised him.

Elena continued.

“I’m done pretending possession is love.”

Vale drew a syringe.

He pressed it near Rose’s blanket.

Agents raised weapons.

One wrong movement could harm the baby.

I heard myself say through the open command line, “Elena, keep him talking.”

She looked toward the nearest camera.

Maybe she heard.

Maybe she knew.

“What did Alejandro promise you?” she asked Vale.

“Protection.”

“He already blamed you.”

Vale’s eyes shifted.

“He has clinic records.”

“So do we.”

“He’ll say I created everything.”

“You did.”

“He asked for heirs.”

“And you sold him children.”

Vale’s certainty broke.

Then Rose began crying.

He looked down.

Elena moved.

She caught his wrist.

Agents rushed.

The syringe fell.

Rose slipped.

Elena caught her against her chest.

Vale was taken down.

I ran across the tarmac.

No one stopped me.

Elena held Rose.

For one second, she looked like our mother.

Then she handed the baby to me.

No demand.

No condition.

Just surrender.

Rose’s face was red from crying.

I held her.

The world narrowed to her breath.

Her weight.

Her warmth.

Mariana sat against an ambulance wheel.

Medics checked her pregnancy.

Mateo’s heartbeat was strong.

Alejandro lay handcuffed on the runway.

He looked at Rose in my arms.

“That’s my daughter.”

I turned toward him.

“She is not your asset.”

His face twisted.

“You would never have had her without me.”

The sentence revealed everything.

He believed creation granted ownership.

Even through theft.

Even through violation.

Vale’s medical bag contained passports for four infants.

Rose.

Mateo.

Lily.

James.

Two were still missing.

Then Vale began laughing from the ground.

“You think this ends with Alejandro?”

Priya looked at him.

“Who else?”

Vale turned toward Elena.

“Ask your mother.”

May you like

Our mother had been dead for five years.

Or so we believed.
