Chapter 5 - THE SISTER WHO CAME BACK FOR THE TRUST

Elena called me the next morning.
Her voice sounded exactly as I remembered.
Warm enough to disarm.
Cold enough to warn.
“You always did survive what should have broken you.”
“Where is Rose?”
“With family.”
“You are not her family.”
“I’m your sister.”
“You stole from Mom.”
“She hid what was mine.”
“Now you’re stealing my child.”
“I’m protecting her from Alejandro.”
I almost believed the tone.
Then Priya traced Elena’s finances.
For six years, she lived under different names.
Luxury apartments.
Private schools for a child no one knew she had.
Money came from shell companies controlled by Alejandro.
They had worked together long before my accident.
“What do you want?” I asked.
“The Rivera Trust.”
My mother’s trust.
Not the Montes shares.
The deeper asset.
My mother founded Rivera Biotech before marrying our father.
The trust controlled patents worth hundreds of millions.
I inherited majority voting rights because Elena was removed after financial misconduct.
She believed the removal was unfair.
Alejandro promised to restore her.
A child biologically connected to me gave them a path.
If I died, Rose inherited.
If Elena became guardian, she controlled the trust.
My sister was not helping Alejandro.
They were partners.
“Did you drug me?” I asked.
Silence.
Then, “I put something in your wine. Alejandro was supposed to drive.”
“He told me to drive.”
Her voice changed.
“He said he would.”
So Alejandro betrayed her too.
The crash was meant to incapacitate me.
Maybe not kill me.
Maybe Elena believed I would survive.
Alejandro increased the risk.
Partnerships built on betrayal turn inward eventually.
I said, “He will remove you once he has control.”
“I have Rose.”
“He has Mariana’s baby.”
Silence.
She had not known the second pregnancy was also biologically mine.
Alejandro created competing heirs.
Competing women.
Competing guardians.
No one could trust anyone else.
That was his strength.
I told Elena the truth.
“Mariana’s child was created from my egg too.”
Her breathing stopped.
“He said it was his and hers.”
“He lied.”
The call ended.
Priya smiled without humor.
“You just broke their alliance.”
Two hours later, Elena sent a location.
A marina near Tahoe.
She wanted immunity.
Police refused full immunity.
She agreed to limited cooperation.
At the marina, agents found her alone.
No baby.
Alejandro had taken Rose the night before.
Elena handed over a drive.
Financial records.
Messages.
Clinic payments.
The plan.
She admitted drugging my wine.
She admitted forging estate documents.
She admitted helping move Rose.
Then she said, “Alejandro has another woman.”
Mariana laughed bitterly from the interview room.
“Of course.”
Not an affair.
A third surrogate.
The missing embryo had not been the only one outside records.
Vale created more embryos using tissue obtained from an ovarian biopsy I underwent years earlier.
Without consent.
At least three additional embryos existed.
One implanted into a woman named Casey Morgan.
Six months pregnant.
Alejandro had created an entire succession line from my genetics.
If one child failed legally, another remained.
The horror became larger than one family.
Vale’s clinic treated women’s reproductive tissue as inventory.
Rich spouses commissioned hidden heirs.
Trusts were targeted.
Consent manufactured.
Priya said, “This is trafficking through genetics.”
Elena knew where Casey lived.
Federal agents entered her home.
Empty.
But a nursery wall carried four names.
ROSE.
MATEO.
LILY.
JAMES.
Potential children.
Potential heirs.
Mateo was Mariana’s unborn son.
Rose was Lucia’s daughter.
Lily and James were unknown.
Then Claire found a schedule.
LILY — DELIVERY COMPLETE.
Another child had already been born.
A second hidden daughter.
Location: Mexico.
Alejandro was no longer only fleeing with Rose.
He may have been moving toward another child and another jurisdiction.
My phone vibrated.
A border-camera image appeared.
Alejandro driving south.
Rose in the back seat.
May you like
Dr. Vale beside him.
They were three hours from Mexico.
