Chapter 4 - THE DAUGHTER HE USED AS COLLATERAL

The photograph was taken in a private neonatal suite.
Calvin recognized the wall logo.
Montes Medical Logistics supplied equipment to small clinics and private recovery centers.
One facility sat outside Sacramento.
Police raided it.
The room had been emptied.
Incubator warm.
Formula bottle half-used.
A nurse’s shoe beneath the bed.
No baby.
No Alejandro.
But a camera recorded part of the evacuation.
Alejandro carried the infant.
Dr. Vale walked beside him.
Lucia Price followed under guard.
She was alive.
The baby was hers by pregnancy.
Mine by genetics.
Alejandro had both mother and child.
The divorce settlement arrived by encrypted email.
Terms:
I surrendered all claims to Montes Medical Logistics.
I transferred voting shares to Alejandro.
I acknowledged Mariana’s pregnancy as a lawful surrogacy.
I waived parental rights to Lucia’s child.
In exchange, Alejandro would return the baby to an approved guardian.
Not me.
Approved guardian.
He still intended to erase me.
Priya Patel joined the case as lead fraud counsel.
She read the settlement once.
“He doesn’t expect you to sign.”
“What does he expect?”
“He expects negotiation.”
“Why?”
“Time.”
Every hour allowed him to move money and children.
Priya traced a medical-equipment shipment leaving Sacramento for Nevada.
One crate listed neonatal oxygen systems.
Weight too high.
Federal agents stopped the truck.
Inside was Lucia.
Drugged.
No baby.
She woke in a hospital twelve hours later.
Her first words were, “Alejandro took Rose.”
Rose.
The child’s name.
Lucia told us Dr. Vale recruited her as a surrogate.
She believed the embryo came from an anonymous couple.
After delivery, she changed her mind about immediate transfer because the infant was premature.
She wanted to remain during treatment.
Alejandro arrived with legal documents.
When she refused to sign, Vale sedated her.
They moved Rose between clinics.
“Did Alejandro say who the genetic mother was?”
Lucia looked at me.
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
“That you were dead.”
The plan assumed my accident killed me.
When I survived, everything became improvisation.
Mariana’s pregnancy was the public child.
Rose was the hidden backup.
My death would activate inheritance rights.
Alejandro would control whichever child served best.
Lucia reached for my hand.
“I’m sorry.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I carried her.”
“I know.”
The words felt complicated.
Not competition.
Not ownership.
Two women connected by a crime committed through both bodies.
Lucia remembered one destination Alejandro mentioned.
Redwood House.
A private property near Lake Tahoe.
Calvin found it under a shell company linked to Dr. Vale.
Agents surrounded the house.
Inside were baby supplies, forged birth records, and a sealed room.
No Rose.
No Alejandro.
On the dining table sat a phone.
It began ringing when we entered remotely through the tactical feed.
I answered from the command vehicle.
Alejandro’s voice came through.
“You brought police.”
“You drugged me.”
“You were supposed to sleep through the drive.”
“You tried to kill me.”
“I tried to avoid a scene.”
The casual cruelty made my hands shake.
“Where is Rose?”
“Safe.”
“With you?”
“Yes.”
“Let me hear her.”
A baby cried faintly.
My body reacted before thought.
Every nerve turned toward the sound.
“You want her?” he asked.
“She is not property.”
“Everything becomes property when lawyers arrive.”
“What do you want?”
“The shares.”
“No.”
“Then Mariana’s child becomes the only heir.”
I understood.
If Rose disappeared, Mariana’s unborn child would remain.
But Mariana’s baby was also biologically mine.
Either child could be used.
He had constructed two living keys to my estate.
Then Alejandro said, “Ask Mariana who signed the clinic witness form.”
I looked at her.
She went pale.
“I signed something,” she whispered.
“What?”
“A consent saying Sofia approved.”
Priya turned.
“You authenticated her forged authorization?”
Mariana began crying.
“Alejandro said she signed remotely.”
Her signature gave the fraud another layer of credibility.
Again, no clean witness.
Everyone had touched the lie.
Alejandro ended the call.
The phone displayed one final video.
Rose sleeping in an infant carrier.
Beside her was my mother’s diamond bracelet.
The bracelet had been locked in my home safe.
Alejandro had taken it.
But the person wearing it in the video was not him.
A woman’s hand adjusted Rose’s blanket.
I recognized the hand.
My older sister, Elena Rivera.

She had disappeared from my life six years earlier after stealing money from our mother’s estate.
Now she was helping my husband steal my child.
