Chapter 12 - Emily Filed For Separation Instead Of Divorce

I did not divorce Daniel immediately.

That surprised almost everyone.

Including Daniel.

I filed for legal separation.

Why?

Because I did not know yet whether the marriage was dead.

I only knew I could not continue living inside it unchanged.

Daniel moved into an apartment.

I stayed in our house.

We separated finances that did not need to remain joint.

He saw his mother without involving me.

I saw Margaret only through attorneys when necessary.

We attended counseling together after four months.

At the first session, Daniel said:

“I failed to protect my wife.”

I interrupted.

“That isn’t enough.”

He looked confused.

The therapist asked me to explain.

“I don’t want a husband who sees himself as my protector after someone hits me.”

Daniel frowned.

“What do you want?”

“A partner who recognizes disrespect before it becomes violence.”

That distinction changed our therapy.

Christmas was not just one terrible moment.

It was the final result of years where Daniel let his mother establish the terms of our marriage.

Where holidays happened at her house.

Financial questions required her approval.

My objections became attitude problems.

Daniel’s job was not merely to respond better next time.

He had to stop placing me in a family hierarchy where next time was inevitable.

That work took months.

No grand gesture could replace it.
