Chapter 13 - Margaret’s Apology Came Without A Christmas Invitation

The following December, Margaret sent me a letter.

Not a text.

Not a gift.

A letter.

It began badly.

I was under extraordinary stress last year—

I almost stopped reading.

Then the second paragraph changed.

Stress explains nothing about putting my hand on you.

I continued.

She admitted the slap.

The financial pressure.

The way she had tried to turn Daniel against me before Arthur arrived.

Then:

I resented you because Daniel began asking me for explanations after he married you. Instead of accepting that as adulthood, I experienced it as betrayal.

That was honest.

Not flattering.

But honest.

At the end:

I do not expect Christmas forgiveness because I wrote one letter.

Good.

She didn’t get it.

Daniel asked whether I would attend Christmas dinner.

“No.”

“At Mom’s?”

“Especially not.”

He nodded.

No argument.

We spent Christmas at a small restaurant overlooking the water.

Just us.

The wedding ring remained in my jewelry box.

We talked for three hours.

Not about Margaret.

Not about the trust.

About us.

For the first time in years, Daniel did not look toward someone else’s expectations before answering me.

It felt unfamiliar.

Promising.

May you like

Not enough yet.

But real.
