Chapter 6 - Margaret Had Been Using Daniel’s Silence As Permission
Arthur met with the independent trustees two days after Christmas.
Margaret arrived with counsel.
Daniel attended separately.
I did not go.
I had already contacted my own attorney.
My marriage and the trust were two different problems.
I refused to let either side use the other to distract me.
The trustee meeting lasted nearly six hours.
Margaret’s argument was straightforward.
Nothing had been hidden intentionally.
MC Residential performed legitimate work.
Related-party disclosure had been “administratively incomplete.”
Pricing differences reflected premium service.
Money remained inside the broader Carter economic ecosystem.
She said:
“No beneficiary suffered a loss.”
Arthur later told me that sentence damaged her more than she realized.
The trust did not exist to support whatever Margaret defined as the Carter ecosystem.
It existed under written fiduciary rules.
Daniel asked her one question during the meeting.
“Why didn’t you tell me you owned the company?”
Margaret answered:
“Because you would have overreacted.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Like Emily did?”
Margaret replied:
“Exactly.”
That was the moment he understood.
His mother had not merely hidden money.
She had trained him to view anyone questioning her as disloyal.
Including me.
Especially me.
The trustees froze Margaret’s expense-approval authority pending full review.
They did not seize her personal assets.
They did not throw her out of her house.
They did not declare her guilty of a crime.
They simply took away the power she had been abusing.
